June 2010
Each part of this dynamic learning community, the students, staff and parents, all contribute to our special school called Brock. The staff at General Brock would like to wish our Brock Family a restful and relaxing summer. We hope you will take time to rejuvenate, and enjoy your friends and family. Have a wonderful summer and return in the fall with good stories to share.
WELCOME: Welcome to Mr. Bruce Adams, our new principal. Mr. Adams is being transferred from Macdonald and has a great deal of experience with Inner City Schools. Bruce is delighted to come to Brock and looks forward to meeting the Brock family in September. We also welcome Karen Noel-Bentley from Livingstone. She is the teacher of the “Twice Exceptional Challenge Program”. She is eager to set up her new classroom next to Ms. Wiesinger’s “Challenge Program.” A big welcome to both Mr. Adams and Ms. Noel-Bentley.
Reminder: School starts at 9:00 a.m. on September 07. The first day of school is from 9:00 to 9:45.
Please note that it is very important to attend school that day: in large part, the organization of our school depends upon the number of students who arrive on the first day. If you will be arriving at school later than September 07, please complete a “Notice of Late Return Form” - available in the office.
Invitation: Registration is still open for Little Mountain’s Summer Day Camp! Kids between the ages of 6 – 12 are invited to attend camp which begins on July 05 and ends on August 27 – 8 weeks. You are invited to attend one week or all 8. For more information, contact Rachel Gold at 604-879-7104. (Other notices regarding camping opportunities are available on our parent bulletin board in the main hallway.)
Happy Summer Everyone!
Gratitude and Recognition
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students, families and staff for making my past two years at Brock Elementary so fantastic. In the time that I’ve been here, I have learned a great deal and feel much gratitude towards the entire community. Members of Brock staff are an outstanding group of professionals who strive to do their best for children, knowing that the work they do makes a difference. Our Brock parent and business communities have supported the school by making the needs of our children a top priority. I am in the process of writing 23 thank you letters: 11 to partners who support our school with after-school programs or special services and 12 to individuals and organizations who have donated money to our school. We are fortunate that our community values who we are and contributes with people and financial resources.
A special thank you to our outstanding PAC who tirelessly support our students on a daily basis: our PAC executive - Ching Lien, Mary Ellen, Corinna, Susan and Anne; Greening - Eve, Steve, Janice, Alexa and Greg; Burger and Brew – Niki; Gardening - Corinna; Safe Arrival – Cynthia, Lindsay, Sue and Kara; Wednesday Popcorn Sales – Arlene and Kristine; Fruit and Vegetable Program – Arlene and Kristine; Comfort Kits – Bronwyn; Environmental Club – Corinne and Sharon. When we work together as a team, we enrich not only the lives of our children, but also our own lives.
Brock staff wishes each of our families a restful and relaxing summer. We hope you enjoy the many family celebrations and outings that summer has to offer. I feel confident that this fantastic little school will continue to “Dream, Dare and Do” and that the children, staff and community will continue to learn and grow together. All the best! Jan Miko, Principal
September Start-up – Tuesday, September 07 from 9:00 – 9:45
The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 07. Returning students are to report to their 2009 – 2010 classrooms. New students will go to the library. Students will be dismissed at 9:45. Kindergarten students will begin on Wednesday, September 08 and their entry process will be explained in a letter mailed to them during the summer.
The way we will organize our school for the 2010 – 2011 school year depends upon the attendance of our new and returning students. Please ensure that your child is at school on the first day. If you know of anyone moving in to our neighbourhood during the summer, please invite them to register the last week of August or first week of September.
Class Organization
We will not finalize class organizations until after September 07. The following criteria determine the placement of students into new classrooms: intellectual, social and emotional development; learning styles and strengths of student; degree of independence in student's work habits; integration of special needs students; separating students who do not work well together; adhering to class size limits. Our final organization will be subject to the realities of the actual number of students who arrive in September. Classroom placement decisions are made with deliberation, thoughtfulness, and are always mindful of each student’s needs.
Staffing Changes
Bobby Asgari, Kevin Brownlee, Ken Batty, Carmen Gee, temporary SSSWs, might not be returning to Brock in the fall. Their placement will be determined by Human Resources during the summer. We hope to see them return, but wish them the best if they are placed elsewhere
Ms. Weldon’s temporary assignment ends on June 30. We are delighted that she spent 2010 with us. We appreciate the energy, integrity and caring that she brought to our grade 7 class and our school community. We wish her well in her new assignment..
Ms. Yao – our afternoon Resource Teacher – has been reassigned to another school. We thank her for her many contributions and wish her the best in her teaching career.

A fun-filled, exciting camp for grades 5 – 7 at Camp Sasamat – Ruminations by Keegan – “I got to try new activities. They have kayaking, swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, archery and jogging. My favourite thing was canoeing. And the activities are so fun you will want to go again and again and again. If you are not impressed, you should go see the beauty of the lake. I can’t forget the smell of the trees……You can never have too much fun! I can’t wait to go to Camp Sasamat next year because of meeting new friends, the activities and the great food! I hope other people will go to camp.”
